Procedure Details of Interpersonal Therapy in Dubai

IPT is a short-term treatment that usually lasts for 12 to 16 weeks. The framework is structured and involves therapist interviews and homework.

The first few appointments will be an assessment where the therapist will ask about symptoms and relationship histories. Then, goals and strategies can be articulated. It is important to note that these may change as treatment progresses.

IPT may be in a group or individually. The therapist may suggest that an important person in your life should take part in the sessions.

Goals of Interpersonal Psychotherapy Goals of Interpersonal Psychotherapy

Interpersonal psychotherapy’s main goal is to lessen the symptoms of depression through improved social relationships. It is based on the theory that interactions with other people have an impact on emotions.

Therapeutic Techniques Used in Interpersonal Therapy in Dubai

IPT directly addresses relationships with other people. Firstly, the therapist starts IPT by conducting an interpersonal inventory. This is a review of significant people in the client’s life and can include present and past relationships.

Then, the therapist can use another technique where categories are created for the types of distress found in the relationships. These groups are called interpersonal problem areas. The major ones are grief, role dispute, role transition, and interpersonal deficits.

Finally, analysis plays an important part in treatment. For example, communication analysis examines the way people communicate within the relationship. It can be done through role-playing exercises.

Therapist’s Role in IPT

The role of the therapist is to support the client in identifying the interpersonal problems that are causing distress. The therapist also provides expert guidance when analyzing issues to create a safe environment during a vulnerable time.

When to Seek Interpersonal Psychotherapy in Dubai

IPT is for people who have trouble making and keeping relationships. The relationship issues can be a one-time situation such as grief over the loss of a particular loved one. It can also be recurring like chronic feelings of isolation.

This type of therapy is particularly useful to address depression. Its symptoms include feelings of hopelessness, changes in routine, and loss of interest in engaging with others.

Client's Role in IPT

The client should express concerns and be open to new insights during therapy. More importantly, they should be active participants even after the sessions end by implementing any lessons learned.

Benefits and Challenges of Interpersonal Psychotherapy in Dubai

IPT increases awareness of a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a relationship. A positive change in the relationship ideally results in better mental health. The main benefit of IPT is that skills are developed to help maintain these relationships.

IPT is also delivered over a short period of time. It can be a practical choice for people who have scheduling or financial constraints. However, this limited timeline can make it difficult to address chronic or recurring issues.

02

Effectiveness and Research on Interpersonal Psychotherapy

There are numerous studies that show IPT is effective in treating different types of depressive disorders. In fact, some show that IPT can help prevent major depression and depression relapses. In 2013, van Hees et al. published a study titled “The Effectiveness of Individual Interpersonal Psychotherapy as a Treatment for Major Depressive Disorder in Adult Outpatients: a Systematic Review” in BMC Psychiatry. They noted that IPT can be used as a first-line treatment for depression.

03

Conclusion

IPT is often used to treat depressive disorders and follows a circular patter. It is based on the belief that interpersonal relationships are a factor in a person’s mood. If these relationships improve, then mental health also gets better. Once a better mood is achieved, this leads to better social and relationship skills.

An IPT therapist should provide a supportive environment to talk about relationship issues. As a DHA-licensed clinical psychologist, Zita Chriszto can provide compassionate care for people who need some assistance in improving their well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Interpersonal Psychotherapy

Is IPT only for depression?

IPT is mainly used in the treatment of depression. However, there is also evidence that it helps people who have anxiety, personality disorders, and eating disorders. The interpersonal skills taught in IPT are also useful to address issues with grief, isolation, or stress.

The therapist should prepare the client to transition out of therapy. Some of the things done are reviewing the insights learned and going through the strategies to maintain the gains achieved during the sessions. IPT can be extended if assessments show the client can benefit from more sessions.

IPT can be used to treat a wide range of mental conditions. However, it is not beneficial for those going through acute psychiatric symptoms. More intensive interventions may be necessary.

The four domains of IPT are:

  • Grief: Dealing with loss.
  • Role Disputes: Resolving conflicts in relationships.
  • Role Transitions: Adjusting to life changes.
  • Interpersonal Deficits: Improving social skills and building relationships.

Yes, IPT has been adapted for adolescents (IPT-A) and has proven effective. A study by Mufson et al. (2004) titled “A Randomized Effectiveness Trial of Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Depressed Adolescents,” published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, showed significant improvements in depressive symptoms and social functioning among adolescents receiving IPT.

The therapist meets with participants one-on-one before starting the group sessions. Working in a group allows clients to work on the skills they learned in a supportive and structured environment. Groups are made based on the similarities of diagnosis.
