Understanding Anger Management

Eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder, profoundly affect an individual’s physical health, emotional well-being, and daily functioning. Zita Chriszto, a DHA-licensed clinical psychologist based in Dubai, provides professional treatment for these complex conditions. With over five years of experience, Zita creates a supportive environment where clients can navigate their challenges and work towards recovery.

Causes of Anger Issues

Anger arises from a combination of genetic, psychological, and environmental factors. The study titled “Toward an Understanding of the Determinants of Anger” by Berkowitz and Harmon-Jones (2004) suggests that aversive conditions—such as physical pain, social stress, and other unpleasant experiences—are significant triggers for anger. Their research indicates that while certain appraisals can influence the intensity of anger, it is often these negative conditions that primarily initiate the emotion. Additionally, learned behaviors, trauma, and significant life changes can increase the likelihood of experiencing uncontrolled anger.

When to Seek Help

Recognizing when to seek professional help for anger management is essential. A study titled “Prevalence and Correlates of Anger in the Community: Results from a National Survey” published in CNS Spectrums by Okuda et al. (2015), found that about 7.8% of adults experience uncontrolled anger. Signs that you may need assistance include frequent, intense anger that disrupts work, strains relationships, or leads to legal issues. Professional therapy provides effective strategies to manage emotions and improve communication, leading to lasting positive changes in your quality of life.

Treatment Options

Our clinic offers a comprehensive approach to treating eating disorders, tailoring evidence-based therapies to individual needs. We combine Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, nutritional counseling, family therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Therapies (MBT). These methods address both psychological and behavioral aspects of eating disorders, promoting sustainable recovery and long-term well-being for adults and children.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Anger Management

What is anger management therapy?

Anger management therapy helps individuals understand and control their anger through proven techniques. It teaches strategies to manage emotional responses effectively. Evidence shows that therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) significantly reduce anger and improve emotional regulation.

High stress lowers your tolerance, so you’re far more likely to lose your temper when you’re already overloaded. Underlying anxiety, depression, poor sleep, or alcohol use can all shorten your fuse. Relaxation techniques – mindfulness meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, and deep breathing – help you feel calmer and more in control, and talking to someone you trust (or a therapist) addresses the deeper drivers.
If your anger is frequent, intense, and negatively affects your relationships or daily life, it may be a problem. Uncontrolled anger can lead to aggression, health issues, and emotional distress, indicating the need for professional help.
Anger shows up in different styles. Seven commonly described types are: (1) Assertive anger – expressed constructively; (2) Behavioural anger – acting out physically; (3) Chronic anger – ongoing, generalised resentment; (4) Passive-aggressive anger – indirect, avoidant expression; (5) Overwhelmed anger – triggered by feeling unable to cope; (6) Retaliatory anger – a deliberate response to provocation; and (7) Self-abusive (inward) anger – turned against oneself through shame or self-criticism. Identifying your dominant style is a common first step in therapy.

If you frequently experience intense anger that’s hard to control and it negatively affects your life, you may benefit from therapy. Studies indicate that uncontrolled anger can lead to personal and professional issues, so seeking help is advisable.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has the strongest research support for treating anger. In CBT you learn to identify the unhelpful or negative thought patterns that fuel anger and replace inaccurate beliefs with more balanced ones. A well-known CBT protocol for anger is Stress Inoculation Training. For very intense emotions, therapists often add Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills. In Dubai, these approaches are delivered as structured 1:1, group, or family sessions by DHA-licensed psychologists.

Medication is not typically the first line of treatment for anger issues but may be used if underlying mental health conditions exist. If anger is related to disorders like depression or anxiety, medications alongside therapy can be effective.

A widely used CBT version of the 3 C’s is Catch it, Check it, Change it: catch the angry thought as it arises, check whether it is accurate and helpful, then change it to a more balanced response before acting. (Some practitioners teach an expanded 4 C’s – Control, Calm, Cope, Connect.) The goal of either framework is to create a pause between trigger and reaction.

Yes, children can greatly benefit from anger management therapy. Early intervention helps them develop healthy coping mechanisms, improving emotional regulation and reducing behavioral issues, as supported by pediatric psychology research.

Help the child calm down in the moment rather than punishing the outburst. Hold their hands and take slow deep breaths together, naming the feeling: “You’re feeling angry right now, and so am I – let’s take some deep breaths together so we can work out what’s going on.” Staying calm yourself, keeping routines predictable, and teaching simple coping words all reduce aggression over time. Persistent or extreme anger is worth discussing with a child psychologist.
The 3-3-3 rule is a simple grounding technique for anxiety and anger: name 3 things you can see, name 3 sounds you can hear, then move 3 parts of your body (for example wiggle your fingers, roll your shoulders, tap your feet). It pulls attention back to the present moment and helps a distressed child calm their nervous system before emotions escalate.
