Causes of Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism are believed to result from a combination of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors. Differences in brain development, often influenced by family history, contribute to the onset of these disorders, sometimes accompanied by early developmental or environmental influences.trauma, previous mental health challenges, and a lack of social support.

Regain Control

Neurodevelopmental disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD and other related conditions, significantly influence how individuals develop cognitive, emotional, and social skills. These conditions typically manifest early in childhood and continue to affect individuals throughout their lives, shaping how they engage with their environment and others. As a DHA-licensed clinical psychologist in Dubai, Zita Chriszto provides professional, evidence-based treatments for children and adults to help them overcome challenges and enhance their quality of life.

When to Seek Help

If you notice persistent challenges with communication, social interaction, or behavior in your child or loved one, it may be time to seek professional help. According to the World Health Organization, Autism affects approximately 1 in 100 people globally, and early intervention is key to ensuring the best outcomes. For adults, if daily life becomes difficult due to cognitive or social challenges, professional support can offer guidance and practical strategies for managing the condition.

Diagnosis of Neurodevelopmental Conditions in Dubai

Diagnosing neurodevelopmental disorders like autism involves comprehensive assessments, including clinical observations, developmental screenings, and standardized tests. The diagnosis can begin as early as age two, and early identification is key to effective intervention. Zita provides psychological assessments in Dubai to deliver accurate diagnoses and create tailored treatment plans.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Depression and Its Treatment

What is a neurodevelopmental disorder?
The World Health Organization defines neurodevelopmental disorders as ‘behavioural and cognitive disorders that arise during the developmental period and involve significant difficulties in the acquisition and execution of specific intellectual, motor, or social functions.’ In everyday terms, these are conditions – such as ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and specific learning disorders – that begin in childhood and affect how a person thinks, learns, moves, communicates, or relates to others.

“Neurodevelopmental” refers to the way the brain develops and functions, particularly during early childhood. Disorders in this category affect how individuals grow, learn, and process information, often influencing social and cognitive abilities.

Neurodevelopmental disorders are not considered mental illnesses but rather conditions that affect brain development, impacting how individuals learn, communicate, and interact with the world. They often overlap with other mental health conditions, but they are distinct in their causes and effects.

No. Neurodevelopment is the general, lifelong process of the brain developing. Autism (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is one specific neurodevelopmental condition that arises when that development follows a different pattern, affecting communication, social interaction, and behaviour. So autism is a neurodevelopmental condition, but neurodevelopment itself is the broad process – which unfolds typically in most people and atypically in conditions such as autism, ADHD, and learning disorders.

Yes, there is a mental support hotline in the UAE that operates daily from 8 am to 8 pm. You can reach it by calling 800-HOPE (8004673) or by sending a WhatsApp message to 8004673.

Possible early signs include: delayed or difficult language development and reading; delayed motor milestones or abnormal movements; intellectual or learning delays; seizures (epilepsy); and vision or hearing impairment. In some cases there are underlying structural differences (such as corpus callosum malformation). No single sign is diagnostic – but persistent delays or regression in a child’s milestones are a reason to seek a developmental assessment early, when support is most effective.
At a neurodevelopmental appointment the clinician talks with you and your child and reviews all the information provided about your child’s strengths, needs, and development (often including questionnaires, school reports, and observations). They assess development across areas such as attention, learning, communication, and behaviour. If a diagnosis such as ADHD or autism is reached, they explain what it means for your child and discuss next steps – which may include support strategies, therapies, or (for ADHD) a conversation about medication.

Neurodevelopmental disorders like autism are lifelong conditions and cannot be “cured.” However, with the right support and treatment, individuals can learn to manage symptoms and develop skills that help them lead fulfilling lives.

Brain development is broadly divided into seven stages: (1) neurogenesis – generating new neurons; (2) cell migration – neurons moving to their proper locations; (3) cell differentiation – neurons taking on specialised roles; (4) cell maturation – neurons growing and developing; (5) synaptogenesis – forming connections (synapses) between neurons; (6) cell death and pruning – removing surplus cells and connections to make the network efficient; and (7) myelogenesis – forming the myelin sheath that speeds up nerve signalling.
About 90% of a child’s brain development happens by age 5. The brain grows fastest in the first years of life – reaching roughly 80% of adult size by age 3 and around 90% by age 5 – which is why early experiences, nutrition, and support matter so much. Development continues well beyond this, though: the brain keeps maturing (especially the prefrontal cortex, which governs planning and impulse control) into the mid-twenties.
